Odivelas’s patrimony
The most important monuments in Odivelas are: Senhor Roubado, Memorial de Odivelas, Igreja Matriz, Convento de D. Dinis and Mosteiro de Odivelas.

The monument known as Senhor
Roubado was built in 1774 by a friar of the Franciscan order and the name
of the monument recalls the theft of sacred vases (among other objects) which
where removed from the mother church in Odivelas(1671) and buried under
the monument’s site.
The Memorial of Odivelas is a
gothic monument which dates back to the middle ages. Some theories among
others, which try to explain its origin, say that it was built in order to give
the remains of King Don Dinis a rest, when they were brought to
Odivelas; or that their King Don João I took some rest on his journey from Alcobaça, or even
because it sets the limit o the monastery’s hunting ground.

The Igreja Matriz is a very
ancient temple that was rebuilt in the end of the 17th century and
restored and improved in the 18th century. The interior consists of a single
nave; it has altars of golden carving
and several paintings.
The Convento de D. Dinis was
built in 1305 by the king Dom Dinis and he built the convent because of
a promise. In 1755, the monastery suffered extensive damage due to the
earthquake. It has a door of pointed arches, which constitutes a good example
of the gothic style of the 14th century. Since 1911 that the Instituto
de Odivelas (a military institution) is part of it.
