Caneças patrimony

 

         At the time, when it was still working, it was used to supply the populations where it passed by.

         The old houses still keep the same rusticity of centuries ago, and consequently, they are true relics which give fame to this village.

         One of the essential buildings for the life of the the inhabitants of Caneças was the Antigo Mercado, now serving as a space for exhibitions and training place for the local bands.

          The Church of Caneças, consecrated to St. Peter, is one of the symbols of the village.

         The Sociedade Musical e Desportiva de Caneças was founded in 1880, brass was created at the same time. The inside space is made by an hall, where some pictures and trophies of the band and of the sports groups are shown, in the first floor there is a department and a room where music classes are attended. The S.M.D.C. is a multi-purpose building, it has a room which is used for parties, theatre, music,etc. The S.M.D.C. was also used as a motion-picture theatre, which at the time was a sign of development since there were so few inhabitants.

 In Caneças there are five fontains: Fonte das Fontainhas, Fonte de Castelo de Vide, Fonte dos Castanheiros, Fonte das Piçarras and Fonte dos Passarinhos.

         The Fonte das Fontainhas  is the most ancient fountain of Caneças, it was created in 1888, its water issuplied by the Ribeira das Águas Livres. Improvements were made in 1910 and in 1932. Nowadays, a playground and a picnic area lie nearby.

         The Fonte da Quinta de Castelo de Vide, is located in a farm with the same name, and it is still a pleasant place.

         The Fonte dos Passarinhos was founded by Joaquim Fernandes Capa e Manuel Duarte Mourisco, and it was inaugurated on 4th April 1934.

          The Fonte das Piçarras, also known as Fonte de Santo António, is one of the most beautiful fountains of Caneças.

         Fonte dos Castanheiros was founded on 8th December 1931 and has a romantic atmosphere for the population.

         The water from these fountains was carried to Lisbon in earthen pots which were typical, the region.

         In Caneças, there are still some dolmens known as Antas das Pedras Grandes. According to a legend, a bishop is said to be buried there after being bitten by a snake.
