Nowadays...

The population living in Caneças has been rising in the last years.

This evolution happened essentially to the fact of Caneças being known for its waters and its “air”, and also because it gathers a group of essential characteristics that turn Caneças into one of the most typical parishes in the suburbs of Lisbon.

The parish of Caneças belonged many years to the district of Loures, being then considered, the third biggest district of the country, in territorial extension.

Loures, such as Caneças, also had a big development, having in 1981, 27 080 habitants and today, 32 874 habitants.

Today, Caneças belongs to the Council of Odivelas which in 1981 had a population of 61 744 habitants, presenting recently a population of 84624 habitants.

We can see that, when Caneças belonged to the district of Loures, in 1981, it had a population of 6937 habitants. Today it has 13 327 habitants, more than the double

It is said that the active population of Caneças is concentrated mostly in the Service sector, reaching as much as 69,7%. On the other hand, about 29,4% of that same population works in the Manufacturing sector. In what concerns the Primary sector, nowadays it employs just 0,94% of the active population.

However, we know that some people still work in the primary sector, although they find in the Service sector their main source of income.

The  village of Caneças still preserves some interesting places, such as: o Lugar d´Além,  with a  considerably good state of conservation which can’t be said about the oldest houses, because these are decayed and lots of them are almost collapsing.

Caneças has also other “built” memories, such as the fountains of the waters that together with the fresh air attracted  tourists and sick people. In the past the Aqueduct of "Free Waters" (as it was called), some old urban houses with registers in store and glazed tiles and a dolmen, which is very degraded nowadays, are other interesting places in this village.

As time went by, some new leisure activities appeared, such as the Band from the "Musical and Sports Society of Caneças" and the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Caneças that offer in these days a group of activities that entertain the population, in their spare time.

Concerning the commercial activity, there were created in the village some banks, good cafés and restaurants, a post-office and some buildings were built that gave this village a modern look.
